Some Pillow Talk with @brandonliberati

23 Sep

PILLOW LOCK(s)

Are frayed ends leaving you broken hair-ted? Let’s talk about silks! A silk pillow case can reduce split ends, bed head, skin irritations and leave both your hair and skin looking orgasmic! This is because it helps you retain moisture. It has the lowest absorption rate of any fabric, especially cotton. And that means less products like moisturizers and leave-in conditioners that you need to apply on your body. Silk is naturally hypoallergenic with a natural resistance to dust mites, fungus and molds. And is made of common amino acids found in your hair and skin. Which means less wrinkles… ON YOUR FACE! Plus it’s machine washable, so tell me just one thing before you go… was it good for you?

WOOF! THIS BEAUTY TIP IS FOR THE MEN.

WET BAR

If you are always traveling to other far away kingdoms and lands, it is easy to forget some of your magical product potions!  If your shape is shifting into an unrecognizable animal, this  mystic trick will transform your hair back into the divine “do” it was born to be! Just “raise the bar”… a wet bar of soap!  Use it to sculpt and style! Men also love the matte finish it gives their strapping styles.  Now that’s a look you can wear…woof!

BEAUTY MYTH #8…. DON’T WEAR YOUR HAIR WET

Don’t let your look be left high and “dry” this summer! Wearing your wefts wet will have you dripping with a fabulous flyaway-less contained look. The fashion week hair guru, Guido Palau, creates polished and sporty looks by applying texture cream (one of my favorite set styling products is Bumble and Bumble Texture Hair (Un) Dressing Cream). Guys, this goes for you too!

Brad Pitt leaves it wet… and us!

Apply a moderate amount from root to ends and comb through with a wide tooth comb before securing your hair back in a ponytail at the nape of your neck. This is one look that won’t leave you looking all “dried” up!

I had the pleasure of working with the beautiful and talented Giada De Laurentiis on several projects including season 9 of The Next Food Network Star with Bobby Flay and Alton Brown. Be sure  to set your DVR  this Sunday June 2nd on The Food Network, check your local listings for times. Food isn’t the only thing being served on this competition show… the sexy styling of Sam Saboura (as seen on TLC‘s Something Borrowed, Something New), and the make-up and style goddess Julie Morgan ( whose clients also include Ricki Lake, Naomi Watts, and Hilary Swank just to name a few) will be on this show’s menu.

BEAUTY MYTH #7….FORMAL OR BLACK TIE EVENINGS REQUIRE AN UPDO

Loosen up. Letting your hair down can be just as glamorous and elegant as any upswept “do”. It is all about being intentional. Define sluggish spirals with a curling iron, or up the sexy in your straight hair with a flatiron. Wearing your weft down will only come across as casual if it looks characterless. So bring your look to life by design. On the B-side you can add a touch of class to your daytime drag with an effortless undo…I mean updo. This can be an occasion to not tie up loose ends.

BEAUTY MYTH #6…SHAMPOO MORE FOR CLEANER HAIR

This dirty dance will have you taking it all off… even the desired lube. Nothing “strips” your hair of essential oils quicker than a sudsy wash. A parched scalp will overcompensate by producing extra sebum (oil) resulting in “greased” up roots and dry “kinky” ends. If this little number sounds familiar, you might want to try applying your shampoo only to the scalp or switch to a softer oil-based shampoo (like coconut oil). If your act is clean… I mean over cleansed, it will take your scalp some time to adjust to the infrequent scouring so just “hang” in there… maybe not from a pole.

BEAUTY MYTH#5…. GET RID OF YOUR GRAY.

I have 2 words for you and they’re not old fart… they’re SILVER SCREEN! A little salt in your pepper used to represent beauty on the decline, but that is no longer the case. And this goes for you too women! You also look stunning with a little (or a lot) of sparkle in your “do”. Even Chanel and Calvin Klein had these silver foxes trot  down their runways. You can turn up the heat in your sterling by adding white highlights around the face and crown, then give them a pearly punch by using a silver toner or  blue base shampoo and conditioner.  You can also just allow your bling to shine through your color or highlights. And men, I have one name for you….Donald Trump. We all agree that fifty shades of grey is definitely sexy.

BEAUTY MYTH #4….FORTY+? YOU’RE TOO OLD TO HAVE LONG HAIR.

If you want to look like an “old wife” then follow this tale. Long hair will NOT age you , no matter what that old rooster and those penned up women in the hen house try to tell you. Peck, I mean pick, a style that will add texture and volume to your vavoom. Some people’s hair will naturally thin as they age, so pump it up by adding layers and movement around the face. Long, poker-straight tresses can be dramatic (If you can rock it, then by all means roll with it), most people want something softer as they bloom. Where you part your hair can also make a huge difference softening your face, so play around with it! Don’t be chicken and make your “long” story “short”, make it sexy.

BEAUTY MYTH #3…..TURN THE HEAT DOWN

Don’t play it cool. Turn up the heat! Keeping the heat setting low on your flatiron can actually do more harm than good. When the temperature is low you have the tendency to drag the iron on the same section over and over. It will weaken the hair’s outer protective cuticle. Always use a heat protectant on hair prior to styling. Divide tresses in  2-inch sections before gliding the iron slowly over the part. Gradually increase the pressure from the root to ends, making only one pass at the highest setting of the typical 410 degrees. Now you’ll look like the “hottest” ticket in town and your hair won’t be left out in the “cold”!

BEAUTY MYTH #2… FIGHT THE FRIZZ

Just let go and get a little frizzy with it!. Take it from the crimp pimp diva Carrie Bradshaw. Frizz can be super-cool and super-glamourous. There are 94 episodes of Sex And The City, and believe me frizz is Carrie’s fourth friend. The key is not to make it look like an accident. This classic Hollywood hair trick of brushing out curly hair to give it a sexy quality has been around since the 30’s. Just add texture and control to the ends with an iconic star that is making a comeback… mousse ( my favorite revival is Bumble and Bumble Thickening Full Form Mousse). Then smooth the roots with a dry hold aerosol hairspray ( an on set and editorial favorite of mine is L’Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray). Be a lover not a fighter.
